Through our research arm, MedStar Cardiovascular Research Network (MCRN), we participate in many regional and national clinical trials. Our physicians often are the first in the region or nation to use new technology and procedures. For example, our physicians were pioneers in the development of:
- Left ventricular assist device (LVAD), which improves the heart’s ability to pump blood
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive option for patients too ill to undergo traditional open surgery
- WATCHMAN™ device, a minimally invasive surgical treatment to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation
At any given time, MCRN is involved in up to 120 active studies on topics such as acute coronary syndrome, cardiac imaging, heart failure, gene discovery, and more, and we are involved in 30 to 50 investigational trials for the treatment of heart disease.
