Minimally Invasive Vascular Surgery Suite | MedStar Health

Hybrid suites combine surgery, imaging

Surgeons operating paitent

The minimally invasive vascular surgery suites at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Heart and Vascular Care Medstar Union Memorial Hospital combine the functionality of a traditional operating room with fully integrated endovascular imaging. This allows surgeons to perform complex combined procedures that are simply not possible with traditional open surgery or endovascular surgery alone.

Most operating rooms use a portable imaging unit during vascular operations. Imaging equipment built into our minimally invasive vascular surgery suite includes the latest technology, including three-dimensional and rotational imaging. This provides our surgeons better visualization and more accurate measurements.

For example, they can incorporate intravascular ultrasound without added machinery, placing an ultrasound probe inside a blood vessel prior to delivery of a stent. Because this technology is available in the suite, advanced techniques can be performed at the same time as traditional open surgery if necessary.
