Alexander Papolos, MD, is a cardiac intensivist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. As a cardiologist, echocardiologist, and critical care doctor, he specializes in several different areas of medicine to help his intensive care patients receive the care they need. As part of his clinical practice, Dr. Papolos treats heart failure, various kinds of cardiomyopathies, acute coronary syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiogenic shock.
Dr. Papolos is actively involved in research and is particularly interested in studying right ventricular failure and right ventricular pulmonary arterial coupling. He has developed a novel echocardiographic measure of pulmonary arterial capacitance and is currently investigating how it can be used to help treat patients with pulmonary hypertension and right heart dysfunction.
